MEPCO Bill Taxes Explained
When you receive your monthly MEPCO electricity bill, you might notice several additional charges apart from your basic unit cost. These extra amounts are government-imposed taxes and surcharges that contribute to national and regional energy programs. Understanding them can help you calculate your total bill more accurately using our MEPCO Bill Calculator and plan your monthly electricity budget more efficiently.
Below are the most common taxes and charges you’ll find on your MEPCO online bill:
FPA (Fuel Price Adjustment)
The Fuel Price Adjustment reflects the fluctuation in fuel costs used for power generation. It changes monthly based on NEPRA’s updates.
GST (General Sales Tax)
This is a 17% tax applied to the total electricity charges as per government regulations. It applies to both residential and commercial consumers.
Electricity Duty (ED)
A provincial tax, usually between 1.5% to 2%, is calculated on the total cost of consumed units.
TV License Fee
A small fixed amount (usually Rs. 35–60) is added to support Pakistan Television (PTV). It appears on all domestic and commercial bills.
Income Tax / Withholding Tax
Applied if your monthly bill exceeds Rs. 25,000, or if you’re a non-filer with the FBR. You can read more in our MEPCO Tax Filing Guide.
TR Surcharge (Tariff Rationalization)
This charge balances subsidies and adjustments between MEPCO and the government under the NEPRA framework.
FC Surcharge (Financing Cost)
A small amount (around Rs. 0.43 per unit) is added to cover the financing cost of power sector debts.
QTR Tariff Adjustment
A quarterly adjustment is applied every three months to stabilize tariff differences and ensure fair billing. Learn more in our Tariff Adjustment Details page.
If your bill seems unusually high, it might be due to Fuel Price Adjustments or seasonal tariff changes. To check the actual breakdown, use the MEPCO Bill Check Tool and compare your current month’s bill with previous ones.
